LAST BLOG POST. Final Reflection.

This course, “Advanced Writing in the Disciplines”, indeed taught me to be a functional and professional writer in my “discipline” of study. The various assignments throughout this course were excellent in training me to be well “disciplined” in my field of writing. The assignments such as the Call for Papers which I responded on a Cyber Policy theme, the Code of Ethics assignment where I wrote and planned out a Code of Ethics of my dream company, the assignment where I wrote a sample Letter to Shareholders as if I was a CEO of my dream company and to round it off, the Cover Letter and Resume assignment. All these helpful assignments taught me how to write for the scholarly, workplace, public audiences. My field of study is Business and Finance. Thus, the audience of my type of writing ranges from clients, co-workers, brokers, lawyers, government officials, CEO’s, managers, banks, business paper audiences and etc. However, I learned that the context of writing changes depending on what type of audience. For example, from my experience at co-op, when communicating with my co-workers and my bank brokers that cover my team, I use very informal type of writing, the one that is very short but very effective. And this goes for all the employees and counter party brokers that I deal with. A simple Hi and the beginning and a simple thank you is necessary but more the less, shorter the message more effective it is. If that was how “internal” writing comes across in my field of study, the “external” type of writing formats in quite different way. For example, a CEO’s letter to his company’s shareholders, a Chairman’s letter to his company’s employees, a article in a Forbes Magazine, a letter or an email to a high level client, and etc. In cases like these, the type of writing becomes very different. These tend to be extremely formal and the ones that I actually encountered at my co-op, such as a Letter from the CEO of my company to our investors, were one of the most well written and sophisticated piece of writing I’ve ever encountered. It’s clear to me that my “discipline” has different style of writing depending on the audience or the counterparty and these practices were evident in my projects in this course. Another thing that I picked up on taking this course is that, it’s extremely effective to take this course while you are on co-op. For me, I was able to pick up so many elements that were discussed in these assignments at my daily operation at my job. I was able to relate so many different things that were going on at my co-op with what I was learning in AWD class. For example, during the Workplace Audience project, where I had to write a Code of Ethics of a company, my firm had an annual companywide Code of Ethics conference. So I was able to pick up many things from that real life conference and exploit that knowledge in my writing.
I was technologically limited and thus couldn’t record a video or anything of that nature but I believe I made it pretty clear through my words that this class was very helpful in developing me as a professional in business writing. I got a great combination of reading, assignments, discussions, research, real life encounter at co-op to really soak in all the disciplines that was present in my field. Awesome course and awesome professor. I would and will recommend this online course to my peers. Cheers!

Week 12, Reflection (Heal the World. MJ)

One of the best musicians to ever live, Michael Jackson, is known all of his legendary songs. His songs are known for his great musical features but also for having a great message lyrically. Out of many of his greats, I chose the song “Heal the World”, and rightfully so, this is a classic. This song, which was written, composed and produced by Michael Jackson, reflects the world that we live in and tries to send a message that we can all work together to make this world a better place. I felt like the lyrics really challenged the audience to reflect on himself/herself. Michael questions us if we really “care”, and if we all did care, we could make a change in this world. This made me reflect on my life. Am I really living with a love in my heart? Do I have joy of giving? Do I care for others? Do I know that there are people dying out there in this world? These series of questions struck my mind when I was meditating on this song and the lyrics. These were such vague and almost rhetorical questions but it definitely did hit me to realize that I couldn’t really answer those questions for sure. Michael uses intimidating words such as; sorrow, dying, deceiving, fear, and tears to really challenge the audience. But he also reminds us that if we care and live for the good of others, we can make this world a better place. Some of the positive words that he uses are heart, giving, strong, joyful, life, and love. I think that’s what really makes this song “reflective”. It challenges the audience to look back on your life but also assures us that there is always good in the midst of bad. I think this concept can be applied to practically anything in this life, in the corporate world, in school, in sports, in relationships, etc. Again, this song is one of MJ’s greats along with songs like “Man in the Mirror”, “We are the World”, “Ben” and “You are not alone”, that delivers a strong message. I can’t say enough about this guy. His works are a great inspiration to my life.

“Heal the World”:

There's A Place In
Your Heart
And I Know That It Is Love
And This Place Could
Be Much
Brighter Than Tomorrow
And If You Really Try
You'll Find There's No Need
To Cry
In This Place You'll Feel
There's No Hurt Or Sorrow

There Are Ways
To Get There
If You Care Enough
For The Living
Make A Little Space
Make A Better Place...

Heal The World
Make It A Better Place
For You And For Me
And The Entire Human Race
There Are People Dying
If You Care Enough
For The Living
Make A Better Place
For You And For Me

If You Want To Know Why
There's A Love That
Cannot Lie
Love Is Strong
It Only Cares For
Joyful Giving
If We Try
We Shall See
In This Bliss
We Cannot Feel
Fear Or Dread
We Stop Existing And
Start Living

Then It Feels That Always
Love's Enough For
Us Growing
So Make A Better World
Make A Better World...

Heal The World
Make It A Better Place
For You And For Me
And The Entire Human Race
There Are People Dying
If You Care Enough
For The Living
Make A Better Place
For You And For Me

And The Dream We Were
Conceived In
Will Reveal A Joyful Face
And The World We
Once Believed In
Will Shine Again In Grace
Then Why Do We Keep
Strangling Life
Wound This Earth
Crucify Its Soul
Though It's Plain To See
This World Is Heavenly
Be God's Glow

We Could Fly So High
Let Our Spirits Never Die
In My Heart
I Feel You Are All
My Brothers
Create A World With
No Fear
Together We'll Cry
Happy Tears
See The Nations Turn
Their Swords
Into Plowshares

We Could Really Get There
If You Cared Enough
For The Living
Make A Little Space
To Make A Better Place...

Heal The World
Make It A Better Place
For You And For Me
And The Entire Human Race
There Are People Dying
If You Care Enough
For The Living
Make A Better Place
For You And For Me

Heal The World
Make It A Better Place
For You And For Me
And The Entire Human Race
There Are People Dying
If You Care Enough
For The Living
Make A Better Place
For You And For Me

Heal The World
Make It A Better Place
For You And For Me
And The Entire Human Race
There Are People Dying
If You Care Enough
For The Living
Make A Better Place
For You And For Me

There Are People Dying
If You Care Enough
For The Living
Make A Better Place
For You And For Me

There Are People Dying
If You Care Enough
For The Living
Make A Better Place
For You And For Me

You And For Me
You And For Me
You And For Me
You And For Me
You And For Me
You And For Me
You And For Me
You And For Me
You And For Me
You And For Me
You And For Me

Heal the world we live in, save it for our children
Heal the world we live in, save it for our children
Heal the world we live in, save it for our children
Heal the world we live in, save it for our children

Week 10. Public Audience

First
I sometimes do this search just for fun. I search myself on google to see my presence in the internet. I have a pretty popular Korean name so I was able to find many people that had the same name as me. I think that's a good thing because if I had a big online presence, it would be hard to find the right Young Choi. I first looked at images and I actually found my LinkedIn profile picture as I was scrolling down the page. Just one picture though. Next, on the general search, I was able to find my LinkedIn page. I think that's a good thing too because the whole point of having a LinkedIn page is to expose yourself to the public and make yourself known. My facebook page wasn't identifiable because I had adjusted my privacy settings on my account. Facebook, is something that I would not want to have exposed to the public, so that's a good thing too. I actually changed my facebook name for a while when I was interviewing for co-op, so that my employer would not be able to find me. If I was an employer, and was searching for Young Choi on the internet, I would be pretty impressed with how this kid protected his identity.

Second
I read the article Governing Social Media by Meredith Farkas, and found some things that I can relate to. It's true that you use facebook and twitter to connect with friends and family, but at the same time you are inadvertently exposed to counterparties that you might not want to show the private side of your life, such as your employer, professor, client, etc. I can admit that I have facebook searched people that I don't really know such as my co-workers and I am sure others have searched me as well. Thus, in this setting, anything you say on facebook or twitter is fair game to the public which might include your co-workers and without knowing that you can say something about your work or your co-workers in a negative connotation. People should be aware of this and customize their private settings so that you are not exposed too much to the public. I also agree with Meredith's suggestion that companies should have policy agreements on what their employees can do and write on social media, this will protect both counterparties and it will benefit both sides of business.

Third
I think the best way to present myself on the internet is to limit my exposure on the internet. In other words, don’t do any social media such as facebook, twitter, LinkedIn, etc. However, as an active facebook user, I had to think otherwise. I think the most logical way is to adjust the privacy settings on your accounts. For facebook, I know that I can make the posts that I upload “public” or for “friends only” and I can also set if I can be searched by my name or not and also I can limit who can friend request me. And having these selections in mind, you can also be cognizant of what you write or post on your social media service. For me, I always think that my boss is my facebook friend and he can see all of the posts that I make. This will really limit my posts that are negative or inappropriate and essentially keep my page clean and right. However, the more I think about this issue and more I read about it, I think the best way is to not have any presence in the social media world. Or just have one that you can fully manage, such as facebook.

Week 7. Dream job revisited

At the start of this course was also around to time where I started my co-op. Back then, I wrote that I would be interested in working in finance or investment banking but I didn’t know what job specifically. But now, almost 2 months into my co-op, I finally think I know what I want to get myself involved in. I am currently working in a Hedge Fund that manages assets of over 12 billion dollars. I work in the middle office operations team. The work I do is different than what the front office does, who are the people that does all the equity research, analysis, and trading executions. I have decided that I want to be an analyst working on the trade floor. People say that finance is not for everyone, it really is for the ones that are qualified and ones that are passionate in investing money. For me, more and more I learn about this industry, more and more I want to get involved in it. The idea of using sophisticated strategies and hedging to multiply one’s capital just fascinates me. It’s amazing to see all different types of investments that are made here and how our analyses and decisions bear fruit. It just blows my mind. So more than before, I want to get into this field of business preferably a private hedge fund and work as a analyst or a trader. In terms of the specifics of the job environment, I can’t complain of where I am right now, our office occupies the top floor of the Hancock Tower, which is the highest building in New England. Thus, for my dream job, I would want an office that is close to being like my current office right now. I would want the company to be fairly small but still well known. However, most hedge funds don’t market themselves because they are not regulated by the SEC, so if I do work in a hedge fund again, it would probably be unknown. But that will be fine.

Week 5. Macklemore post

I was overwhelmed by this song “Ten Thousand Times” by Macklemore . This is a work of art through lyrics and music. Macklemore displays his exceptional talent of expressing his emotions through the rhymes. The overall knowledge he exhibits about the world that we live in and how he sees it being run is quite special. The bases of his lyrics are about how he has ended up in his music career and the struggles that he had through the process. He sums up his journey with his last line of the song, “Welcome to the Heist”. The word “Heist” here has two connotations I believe, the actual meaning of the word and also highest, spelled differently. He is telling us that he has made it to where he dreamed to be. This theme is widely centralized in the course of the song. He is telling us that hard work is key to success and that’s the most important element that got him to where he is. The title of the song “Ten Thousand Hours” comes from a theme in Malcolm Gladwell’s book, “Outliers”. Malcolm Gladwell explains how every leader in a field puts in 10,000 hours of practice into their work, through his theme “Ten Thousand Hours”. Macklemore is utilizing this theme here from Gladwell. He is telling us that he is where he is now because he put in the hours of hard work, 10,000 hours of work, into practicing what he loves, which is music. The details of how he went about can be found in his lyrics. Some highlights of the lyrics are:

“Felt like I got signed the day that I got an agent”
“Got an iTunes check, shit man, I’m payin’ rent. About damn time that I got up out of my basement”
“Ten thousand hours I’m so damn close I can taste it”
“Nothing you can hold but everything that it is Ten thousand”

Pretty impressive sets of rhymes are displayed here.

Go check it out for yourself. You will be amazed.

Cheers.

Week 3 blog.

Finance and business in general is a very broad field of study. There are so many business journals out there and they tend to talk about similar current event or issue in hand. I was able to pick out a couple. These discussions were popular at my hedge fund that I work in and I was able to locate articles that support them. Here they are.

Technology promises a better informed society, but information must flow freely
This article discusses the new trend in all businesses. New generation of technology such as computers, laptops, smartphones and tablets continues to have a great impact on overall operations of a business. In fact, this is only going to get faster and better. I would like to dig deeper into how fast the digital age has taken over our generation and what to look out for next. I would love to find out the new trend or the next big thing that will be upon us in the 3rd and 4th quarter of this fiscal year.

Kyle Bass: Japanese Yen Versus Dollar Will Hit 200 To One Ratio

This issue has been talk about pretty heavily in the last couple of weeks. As I deal with currency swaps and foreign currency exchange rates at my hedge fund, this issue seems very relevant and appropriate to discuss about. The Japanese Yen has been declining in value significantly. Currently it's less than 90 to the dollar. If the Japanese Yen does collapse, it will have a major impact to the nation. Both economically and emotionally because Japan has never faced such a destruction in their economy. I think it will also have a great impact in the global markets since Japan is a very global marketplace. It will be interesting to see how this entails and I would love to be heads up on what happens. This class will definately help me be ahead on this matter.
